Seeking to take art beyond mere performance and understand the intellect, grammar and spirit of dance, Shri R Yagnaraman, the very respected secretary of Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai, started the Natya Kala Conference in 1981.

First convened by Dr Padma Subrahmanyam, herself a scholar on dance, this conference broke new ground in dance research, historiography, dance pedagogy and the inter relationship of the various performing arts.

Over the last nearly three decades renowned names from the firmament of dance, have been invited by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, to don the mantle of Convenor of the Natya Kala Conference for a period of two years, thus ensuring a scintillating variety of thought and approaches to dance research. Only a recipient of the much coveted 'Nritya Choodamani' award is invited to convene this conference. Renowned dancer, choreographer, scholar, writer and arts commentator, Padmashri awardee and Nritya Choodamani recipient, Dr Ananda Shankar Jayant, has been invited to be the convenor for the Natya Kala Conference for the year 2008 and 2009.
